Leah Sharibu, the only school girl remaining in Boko Haram captivity after the Dapchi kidnappings, turns sixteen today.
Leah was held back for refusing to convert to Islam after the Nigerian government negotiated and paid ransom for the release of the other school girls.
Her whereabouts remain unknown despite promises by the federal government to get her released.
On February 19, 2018, Boko Haram terrorist stormed the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi and carted away 110 school girls.
On 21 March 2018 after negotiating with terrorists, the Nigerian government announced the release of all but one of the kidnapped school girls; Leah was held back and not negotiated for on account of her faith.
She has been in Boko Haram captivity for 449 days.
She marked her 15th birthday in captivity last May and is now marking another birthday with Boko Haram despite several promises by both the Federal Government and the military .
Shortly after the other girls were released , President Muhammadu Buhari expressed sadness over Sharibu’s situation and promised his government will not abandon her.
“The lone Dapchi girl, Leah , will not be abandoned . President Buhari assures the Sharibu family that he will continue to do all he can to ensure that they also have cause to rejoice with their daughter soon ,” a statement from Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman , had read .
The Bring Back Back Our Girls movement led by a former Minister of Education , Mrs . Oby Ezekwesili, held a series of protests to demand for her release as well as that of over 100 Chibok schoolgirls who have been in captivity for over 1,500 days .
Nearly 8,000 Nigerians are tweeting about Leah with the #FreeLeahSharibu# hashtag.
Ezekwesili said the government was not taking the matter as seriously as it should because Sharibu , like the other girls , were from poor homes.
Leah Sharibu is a young but strong girl who has chosen to stand by her faith in the face of persecution. Leah is not forgotten. We wish her happy birthday and we pray God Almighty will intervene in her affairs and cause her to gain her freedom.
