Topic: Defeating your Giant
Text: 1 Samuel 17:34-35

There was a problem at hand. The whole of the army of Israel including King Saul was faced with a problem, and the name of this problem was Goliath of Gath. It was a problem that Saul could not handle, despite his anointing and kingship, his position, his authority or power or ability. He couldn’t solve this problem. It was a major problem. David came to the scene and solved this problem of the giant defying the armies of the living God. David was ready to confront this giant and remove the shame and the insult from the children of Israel. But Saul wouldn’t let him, because according to Saul, David was but a youth and there was no way he could confront Goliath who had been a champion from his youth. David applied a major principle of life. David shared the testimonies of the things that God had done in his life. He shared the testimonies of past victories, and past wonders of God in his life, It is essential to be in remembrance of the past goodness of God, of the past wonders and the miracles of God in our lives. There are times when we are confronted with certain issues that are bigger than us, and at such times recall the past goodness of God. Hebrews 13:8, The God who did it in the past has not changed.

David shared the past victories of how he slew the lion and the bear. What are you going through at the moment? Remember you had an issue some time ago, but God resolved the issue. If there is nothing you can point to in your life, remember there are people who have faced certain issues, or similar issues in their lives, and God resolved those issues for them. Have you heard the testimony of the goodness of God in the life of a neighbour? For a friend, for a church member, for a colleague at work? If you’re able to point to someone that God has done it for before, then remind yourself that God is not a respecter of  persons. What he has done for one, he will do for the other, he will do it for you also. Don’t allow testimonies to be scarce on your lips. The principle is simple. He has done it before and He will do it again.

Secondly, you must understand that we prove ourselves capable of the big things in the little things and in lonely places. This here is what David did. He assured Saul that he was qualified to bring down Goliath because of the little things in lonely places. Start handling little things, in secret places, lonely places where nobody is seeing you. That is where you prove yourself capable of handling the big things. If you are unable to handle the little things, you may not be able to handle the big things. Don’t look down on those little things you have been asked to do in an organization, a church, a place of business, or a family. Do those little things diligently? The Bible encourages us to be diligent with whatever we find to do. Learn from David and replicate the principles he applied to achieve his feat.

Prayer Focus

1. Father. Let there be testimonies of your wonders in my life, let there be wonders to point to. Let me have your miracles, goodness, and faithfulness to point to in my life. Let me not lack testimonies. Let me not lack your wonders. Let me not lack evidence of your goodness. In the name of Jesus.
2. Father, Give me the grace to prove myself competent at the little things. Help me to show myself faithful in the little things you have committed into my hands. Let me not fail you at little things. Let me not disappoint you with little things.
3. Father, You are too faithful to fail. You are too faithful to disappoint. What you have done before. The great things you have done before do in my life again the testimonies of your greatness that we have read, that I have read, that I have heard the great things you have done in other people’s lives do in my life also.
